A University of Minnesota selection known for its outstanding floral display and unwavering verticality in the garden, Sorghastrum nutans Golden Sunset® ('MNYG318153')  is the ornamental native warm-season grass that you've been searching for. The fluffy inflorescences appear in August with a gorgeous golden yellow glow, earlier than the species, with strappy, linear, olive-green blades taking on an identical golden hue come autumn. Its ornamentality makes Golden Sunset® Yellow Prairie Grass a wonderful native replacement for Calamagrostis x acutiflora 'Karl Foerster' similarly reaching a height of 4' to 6' at maturity and remaining upright well past its prime. Its visual versatility makes Sorghastrum nutans Golden Sunset® ideal for not only an informal cottage garden, but a champion in the formal landscape as well. Both the summery inflorescences as well as the persistent seedheads make spectacular additions to seasonal cut flower arrangements.  2026 PHS Gold Medal Winner.
